Hi! I'm Meredith. I live in Portland, OR but am originally from Baltimore, MD. Ever since I was a child I have had a difficult, yet kind of interesting, condition called Misophonia, or Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome ("4S").
A few years ago, I sought to find other people local to me who have misophonia. In 2012 I eagerly attended a meet-up (off of the site meetup.com) in a nearby state, only to be told by the host that although having his group for awhile and having a handful of members in it, I was the first one that he actually met in person. We talked for 2 hours about our experiences with the condition. After that meeting, I developed a desire to create a meet-up group of my own in an effort to join people together and build an in-person community.
I had learned by chance that an old friend of mine also has this condition. In April of 2013 we made the "MD Misophonia Support Group". Since that time, it has grown to over 40 members. The meetups take place in the Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington D.C. areas.
There are a few other misophonia meetup groups out there currently. I find that many people on misophonia message boards ask the question "Does anyone else here live near me?". A map must be the next answer. One where people can drop a pin on the city or general area they live in without needing to create any sort of login and they can put as much or as little contact information (such as just an email address) as they'd like.
There are many more of us than we believe. We are all strong individuals fighting through daily struggles. Through meeting others like us, we can share stories, empathize, learn, and support one another.
